Title: A Light in the Darkness
prompt: silver and gold
Word Count: 225
I wrapped the baby carefully in the softest blanket I could find. It was wool, I hoped it wouldn't irritate the baby's skin too much. Newborns are so fragile. As I stared out the window I watched the stars shimmering brightly in the clear night sky. A new moon, a rare opportunity to give the stars the brilliance they so deserve. They glittered like diamonds. As I sat there holding my new child, my beloved baby, I wondered what I could have done in my lifetime to deserve such a precious gift as this little person in my arms. More precious even than silver or gold, more precious than all the fortunes in the world, I couldn't imagine my life being any better than it was now.
"Phoebe," I whispered with a smile. She was my bright light in the darkness. Why do newborns make you feel like anything is possible? She yawned then, her tiny little mouth opening to its largest before spreading into a funny toothless grin. I couldn't help but smile back at her. She reached a tired hand toward my face as the wordless sounds spilled out of her mouth. I could almost hear the 'mama'. It was only the first of December, but I could tell that Phoebe was going to be the best Christmas gift I would ever receive.
