One good thing about Australia? Movies before everyone else =P
So went and saw the final HP movie with the MIL today. Gotta say, I think it's my favourite of all eight now. It's only been a few hours since I exited the theatre and I'm already starting to forget things but I enjoyed the movie more than I expected to. =) Sadly, I didn't read the book before going to see the movie so I'm probably remembering a few things wrong...
Things of note (not in any order):
~Movie starts off in exactly the same place the first half left off. I really like that for some reason.
~totally didn't realise Ollivander was the same guy who played Professor Oxley in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I'm amused for whatever reason
~I love Dame Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall. She freaking rocks. "I've always wanted to use that spell!" Like a little school girl soooooo funny I love her. "Yes, Mr. Longbottom, I am giving you permission. BOOM!"
~I was a bit disappointed that a couple scenes weren't done as exact book interpretations when I honestly don't think they would've been any different had they been kept as such. To lead Harry to Helena Ravenclaw, Harry's supposed to ask Luna who the Ravenclaw ghost is, right? She's not supposed to lead him to the talking to dead people thing. And it would have been so much cooler to see the Ravenclaw doorknocker. I suppose it had to happen like that though if they didn't want to give more screen time to the Carrows?
~The whole conversation with the Grey Lady wasn't what I expected it to be. It was all right, don't get me wrong. It just felt like it was lacking something...
~Probably couldn't/didn't want to get the Crabbe actor back so Malfoy ends up going into the RoR with Blaise and Goyle, Goyle activates the fire and Goyle dies. They still rescue the remaining two Slytherins via broomsticks while escaping. Ron: "If saving them gets us killed Harry I'm going to kill you."
~They didn't actually touch the diadem in the books. They didn't actually find it, did they? Movie: they find it, puncture it with the basilisk fang, and then Ron kicks it into the fire before the doors to the RoR close. Unnecessary and unneeded... Blah.
~SNAPE DOESN'T DIE IN A NEVER BEFORE SEEN BOATHOUSE. Honestly, I don't remember ever seeing this boathouse before. Why did they waste money building a new setpiece for a scene--which they already have the setpiece for (hello Shrieking Shack?)--that they hardly spent any time on?!?! I don't understand. Snape deserved better than that. Snape deserved a better end scene than what they gave him I think...but it wasn't too bad I suppose. In other news, Alan Rickman's gained a bit of weight since the first movie...way weird seeing him with that much excess on his cheeks. Always thought of Snape as tall and lanky the entire time...
~This movie really brings to light the fact that I am ridiculously annoyed by the fact that after the second movie they never changed the colour of Dan Radcliffe's eyes to green. It's like...this thing that's an important figure in the books and they've just gone and taken it away.
~WHY OH WHY did they take away Ron's special moment of punching Draco Malfoy in the face?! That's the sceond time we've saved your arse today! Poof. And it's gone. Not even there. I love that moment.
~YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY Neville!! I loved him before but I love him even more. His beautiful little speech when Voldemort comes to the Hogwarts grounds and oh Matthew Lewis you wonderful boy...
~YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY Neville! They make his cutting off Nagini's head so much better because he saves Ron and Hermione while doing it. Loveable little man. And then his comment about Luna... OTP!! =)
~What else what else...so many things... I'm bummed Percy didn't make it as a larger role in the last movies... his coming back after the minister died and all that.
~George's death scene should've been...I dunno. More.
~The bank scenes were beautiful! I loved the way they did them and I don't think I really would've changed much if it had been up to me.
~Harry never pulled Voldemort off the castle cliff. I don't think they should've added that, even for movie entertainment.
~Yay for the Malfoy exit. Really like it the way they did it.
~*sigh* The Epilogue. Oh the epilogue. My MIL actually likes that part of the book. I don't think it was really done right but...meh. They only child's name that is spoken is Albus Severus. You don't know that Ron and Hermione had Hugo and Rose. You don't know that Harry and Ginny--omg what did wardrobe do to the poor girl--had two children before Albus Severus named James and Lily (is that weird to anyone else?), and you don't know that Bill and Fleur had a girl named Victoire or that Teddy is even in the picture or who the other children in the compartment with Albus Severus are or that Draco has two kids named Astoria and Scorpius and omg the end just ANNOYS me. =(
~young Sirius in the Snape pensieve memory scene is played by a boy named Rohan Gotobed. Does that amuse anyone else?
~They cut out the entire conversation with Dumbledore's painting. I wish at least part of it had been added.
~Hogsmeade! Aberforth! Patronus goat!! Goat vs. stag come on people! comedy in darkness is a good thing! Would've gotten a good laugh...if it had been in the movie!
I'll probably remember more later but for now, that's it!
