"MALFOY!" Harry bellowed. His voice echoed around the room, an empty reminder of what the war had done to the hallowed halls of Hogwarts. "Stop hiding! Come out and fight me you coward!" A laugh bounced off the walls, making it difficult for Harry to pin down just where it was coming from.

"What's the matter, Potter?" came Draco's voice. He was making sure to stay well hidden. "The Dark Lord not enough for you? Have to show the rest of the world just how powerful you really are? Not satisfied yet?" His maddening laugh echoed around the hall again, filling the room as he darted from one hiding spot to another. "You can't help it, can you? Got the taste of blood in your mouth now, haven't you? You want more, don't you!"

"SHUT UP!" Harry screamed, his wand pointing in every direction, trying to find the source of the voice. "I am NOT a murderer! Voldemort deserved to die; he killed my parents! He killed Professor Lupin! He killed Ron and Percy and Mister Weasley! He was the murderer! And so are you!" Harry took a breath and then turned as the sound of stone scraping stone filled his ears.

"You tried to kill Dumbledore! You tried to kill Ginny!" Harry tripped over a fallen stone, falling to his knees, exhausted from the chase. "You...and your pathetic father...and your--"

"Don't you dare talk about my family!" Draco yelled, finally stepping out form behind a large cluster of rocks and directing a stream of bright red light in Harry's direction. "You have no idea what it's like to be in my family! You have no idea what it means to be a Malfoy! You have no idea of the things my family has been through!" He cast a last minute shield charm, just barely enough to protect himself from the curse that Harry had sent his way. The majority of the spell was deflected, but the force sent him skidding backwards across the stone. He sword, and then ducked back behind the rockpile.

"No idea of the things your family has been through?" Harry asked loudly, re-enforcing the shield spell that had deflected Draco's previous curse. "Your family's doings are infamous!" Harry shouted across the hall. "Your father single handedly intimidated the entire Wizarding World into his ridiculously stupid ways and your mum was daft enough to marry him!" An almost psychopathic laugh escapd Harry's lips, drowning out the freakishly desperate sounding "Shut up!" that came from Draco Malfoy's corner of the room.

"And where are they now, Malfoy?" Harry taunted, not bothering to hide behind pieces of rock and stone any longer. "Where are dear old mummy and daddy now? Not here to protect you anymore, are they? Are they still hiding from 'The Chosen One'?"

"Avada Kedavra!" Draco screamed, flinging himself from behind the rock pile, his wand pointing in Harry's general direction. Fortunately for Harry, Draco's anger and irritated state caused the curse to go wide. He barely had to sidestep to avoid it.

"Avada Kedavra?" Harry repeated with a laugh and a raised eyebrow. "You can't face the truth, so you stoop to using the Killing Curse? You would dare use an Unforgiveable against me? And you can't even do that. You're as useless as your father. Pathetic, snivelling wretch of a man who followed someone just as useless!" Draco pursed his lips, trying to keep his anger from getting the better of him.

"What? Nothing to say? Or is it just that I can't hear you because you're running away?" Harry asked cruelly.

Still nothing.

"That's right. Run away to daddy because now that he's a laughing stock he'll make everything better."

"Shut up, Potter." It was quiet, but there was a fierceness to Draco's words that made it seem as though he had shouted them. It certainly caught Harry by surprise. He stood there, practically speechless.

"So the 'Chosen One' does know how to follow orders." The sarcasm of Draco's statement was practically dripping off the ceiling. Harry's confusion was evident in his silence, so Draco took the opportunity to keep talking.

"Well, let me tell you something, pathetic Potter. For all your titles and being favoured and all, even for being taught by Professor Snape and...and Professor Dumbledore, you're pretty stupid. Yeah. You're STUPID." His voice was rising and he was no longer sprawling on the ground from anger and a curse gone awry. He was standing now, and slowly closing the gap between them.

"If you actually stopped to think about things, you'd realise that my father is DEAD. Murdered by his own brother-in-law on the Dark Lord's orders. Betrayed by the very man that he respected and revered! But oh, that's not all of it. Want to know more? My mother was forced into hiding. She practically went mad trying to stay hidden. Until that arse of a Dark Lord killed her. She didn't even do anything! At least your parents were killed for good reasons." They were practically face to face now.

"So don't talk about my family like you know them, Potter!" Draco yelled before letting his fist fly. It connected squarely with Harry's jaw, causing the former Gryffindor to back up a step.

"You arse!" Harry cried, ignoring the pain in his jaw and flying at Draco, sending them both hurtling to the ground.

"Stupid wanker!"

"Ruddy prat!"

"Idiotic git!"

"Brainless moron!"

They went on rolling around on the rocks and insulting each other, each of them gaining numerous cuts and bruises as the minutes passed. Finally, after one knee to a groin and two groans later, both of them were lying on their backs and breathing heavily.

"Just--can't stand--losing--can you--Potter?" Draco managed to wheeze out between breaths.

"Not--to idiots--like you--Malfoy," Harry gasped back at him. "I'm just--as stubborn--as you are."

They both fell silent after that, the realisation of what had just happened hitting both of them hard.

"This is pointless, Potter. I'll still hate you and you'll always despise me," Draco said quietly. He got up slowly, sucking air in through his teeth and cradling his elbow. "I'm tired of trying to fit into your world. You've won. Now just...leave me alone." He spit some blood out of his mouth and turned to walk away. Harry didn't know what to say. He could see Draco's back, and he wanted more than anything for Draco to leave, or for Draco to drop dead, but something about what the other boy had said had stuck in his mind.

"Malfoy," he hissed through clenched teeth, "what do you mean 'my world'?" he asked, limping towards where Draco was standing, wincing as a stream of blood trickled slowly down his leg.

"Oh, come off it Potter!" Draco snarled angrily. "Use what's left of that speck of a brain and think about it! It's been your world since before we were born! Your parents died to save you, people wanted to protect you--"

"yeah, and some people wanted to possess me," Harry interrupted with a snort.

"Will you stop and listen for once?!" Draco snapped. "It's always been about you, don't you understand?! It's always been about you and I'm sick of it!" He turned quickly and started walking out the doors that were amazingly still standing.

Once again, Harry stopped Draco from leaving.

"Is that why you wanted to be my friend?" he asked hesitantly. "Back in first year. So that people...so that, you could be noticed too?"

Draco's eyes narrowed as he stopped walking, angry that Harry had figured it out, but relieved at the same time. He sighed, the shameful burden finally lifted from his heart.

"People loved you and they didn't even know you. It's ridiculous now that I think back on it, but all I wanted was to be like you. To be you. To have what you had. People felt bad for you, people wanted to take care of you, to be close to you." He raised his eyes to the ceiling, wondering why he kept telling Harry all of this.

"You wanted to be like me?" Harry asked, surprised by what Draco had just admitted. "I'd be lying, if I said I wanted to be like you, but at some points I wanted what you had. You had family. You had a home. You slept in a bed and got gifts from people, gifts that were more than just dirty socks and used toothpicks. You grew up knowing about your family, and as bad as some of them were, you at least knew who they were. Before all of this happened, I would have given anything for that."

A long silence filled the room as Harry and Draco stared and watched each other. It was odd to hear these confessions from each other, and neither of them really knew what to say. It was Draco who broke the quiet first.

"I suppose now is when we say we've been wasting our time wanting what's not ours," he said with a roll of his eyes.

"Well, you're such a smart arse, there's not really any point to that now, is there?" Harry pointed out, his eyerows raised in question, a smile hinted at in the glimmer in his eyes.

"Don't push it, Potter. I just want to end this. Like I said, I'm sick of trying to live in your world. If this is the way to finish it, then it's what I'm willing to do. Truce?" He reached out his good hand, locking eyes with Harry, silvery gray connecting with bright green. For a split second, he wondered how drastically different life would have been if Harry had been sorted into Slytherin.

Harry glanced at Draco's hand as though he were expecting some kind of trick. "Are you bein serious?" Harry asked quietly.

"I've never been more serious in my life," Draco replied, his expression solemn.

After a minute of silent contemplation, Harry nodded and shook Draco's hand.

"To the beginning of a new world."
